Brunswick Considers Drug Testing Policy

Home / View News

BRUNSWICK COUNTY teachers are preparing for a drug test.

The Brunswick County School Board is expected to pass a policy that would require drug screenings for new employees and random tests for other district employees.

Parents at Supply Elementary School say the plan gives them peace of mind as they send their children off to school.

"Comfort, definitely. That's the word. It makes me feel comfortable about what's going on," said parent Lisa Babson.

"It gives me a sound mind knowing that my kid is in a drug-free environment," said parent Kimberly Clemmons.

The school district wants to hold its employees accountable. At least one was recently arrested on drug charges and administrators see the tests as a way to help.

"We want them to get treatment if they are doing this," said Adam Henning, spokesman for Brunswick County Schools.

If the policy passes, district employees could be drug tested as early as July. While it is an expense, officials believe it's worth it.

The plan may also open the door for testing students. Discussions on that are in the early stages, but parents at Supply Elementary say they'd be behind that plan as well.
