There's a great choice of directions in which one can use spare $42 billion. Is there is something that government can do with this money if it accidentally falls into its hands?
Sure. For instance, it could invest $7 billion out of it into the State Children's Health Insurance Program, and the sum would still be enormous. This project is on its way to be restricted, as politicians consider it to be highly resource-consuming.
There are many more reasons which are serious enough to be taken note of.
What does $42 billion mean? That's the actual sum of money which is put into law enforcement budget for fighting marijuana crimes and law violation.
The number of individuals seized for possessing marijuana was whopping 738,916 last year. If compared, the annual number of all arrested for other crimes was about 612 000.
When considering the US administration stats marijuana law enforcement turns into a $113 billion expense every year. These expenses are poorly controlled as the majority of them is not included into official list of law enforcement policies.
Surely, pot laws are not the most expensive ones among the total range of bills existing in American reality. One terrible mistake the government makes by forbidding marijuana use is seizing the business opportunity from legal market leaders to the criminal world, which cannot be regulated and has its own laws.
This would be essential if marijuana were a seriously health-threatening product which should be forbidden by all means. However, the scientific world is of the opposite opinion. Pot is surprisingly secure if compared to alcohol, for instance. Firstly, marijuana does not cause addiction as often as alcohol does. Only 9 percent of people who abuse marijuana become addicted, in comparison to fifteen percent with relation to alcoholics. And the amount of toxins marijuana flushes into body is also significantly lower. Alcoholics were long ago warned that the object of their addiction is prone to destroy vital organs and become a reason of cancer. However, marijuana has never been listed as a drug which leads to fatality because of overdose, and researches still doubt its abuse is actually endangering human's life. What's about aggression? There is still much to hear from researches: alcohol provokes aggression, and pot is not mentioned for it.
No matter what scientists say, in America one person is held for marijuana law violation every minute. And this is done in face of huge government expenses, taxes, and obvious benefit for the criminal world.
There's only one solution to the problem: pot should be limited just as alcohol. This solution should be encouraged by politicians. |
